Choose a word with at least 5 letters and have each child write the word down the left side of the page, one letter under another. Now have one child choose a category. Give everyone 5 minutes (or more for younger children) to write down as many words related to that category as they can, beginning with the letters in the word along the left. For example, write the word ‘oyster’ down the left side of the page, each letter on its own line. If the category is animals, children should write one animal whose name begins with “o” (octopus), another whose name begins with “y” (yearling), another that begins with “s’ (sloth) and so on. Score one point for each name the child comes up with. Two points for each name no one repeats.
