Charades

Ages 4+ (parental supervision recommended)

Charades for kids is a classic game where players communicate words or phrases through silent gestures encouraging creative thinking, strengthening communication and social skills.

Ingredients:

  • Small pieces of paper
  • Pencils
  • Bowl or Box

Recipe for Fun

STEP 1: Prepare clue cards by writing one simple word or short phrase on small strips of paper. For younger children who cannot read, draw pictures or use printed picture cards.

STEP 2: Fold the papers and place them in a bowl or hat. Decide on teams and the order of who will give clues and who will guess.

STEP 3: Agree on a time limit for each turn, typically 30–60 seconds for older kids, while being more flexible for younger ones.

STEP 4: Draw and Act: The first player (often the youngest) picks a card. They must silently act out the clue using only body movements, gestures, and facial expressions. Remember Charades is a silent game - no talking 😊

STEP 5: Other players (or the β€œactor’s” teammates) shout out guesses until the correct answer is found or time runs out.

STEP 6: If a player or team guesses correctly, they earn a point or keep the card. The next player then takes their turn acting.

STEP 7: The game continues until a set number of points is reached (e.g., three cards collected) or all clues have been used.

Key Hand Signals for Kids

Teaching these simplified signals can help children narrow down their guesses:

  • Number of Words: Hold up the corresponding number of fingers.

  • Sounds Like: Cup a hand behind the ear to show the word rhymes with another.

  • Correct Guess: Tap the nose and point to the person who guessed correctly.

  • Small Word: Hold the index finger and thumb close together to indicate words like "a" or "the".

Age-Appropriate Categories: Organizing clues into categories – Nouns, Activities, Characters, Movies, Books - helps children focus their thinking and guessing.
